Our neighbor moved out six weeks ago and left us as caretakers of her 19-year-old cat and free-ranging white bunny. Since she was moving to a rural area, she thought it would be unsafe for them (eagles, coyotes, raccoons, etc.)
Five days ago the cat died in her sleep, and today Luna was killed by a car. A woman down the street came home and saw the rabbit's white body in the middle of the street. Everytime we come home, for years, we have been afraid of seeing a white spot on the street. We don't know how long she had been in the street, but we are hoping that she didn't suffer. She was already dead when the neighbor got to her.
Luna was well-known in the entire neighborhood. Children would look for her on the way to the park, and people would feed her carrots. She recognized people and would often hop over to people that she knew so they could pet her. She loved sitting on top of the mound in the neighbor's yard and watching everything going on around her. Although she would have lived a longer life in a cage, she wouldn't have been as happy. She roamed freely in our neighborhood for over two years, and enriched the lives of everyone who knew her. She is missed.

That's really sad. I feel awful- the person who hit her didn't stop? I hope she didn't suffer. Oh, that's just terrible. Is A okay? I know you both really liked her.
It's true, though, she was a very happy bunny, much happier than had she been caged. She led a very good life.
Sorry to hear about Luna :( She never really let me pet her though.
Oh no! I'm so sorry. It sounds like she led a wonderful life though. How terrible to lose both of them in such a a short span of time.
Ugh ... how sad. I can't imagine how you and the rest of the neighborhood feels. My neighbors had an outdoor cat, Oliver, who was THE most friendliest and happiest cat in the world. He was the type of cat that would come running down the street if he saw you coming out of your front door. One day, I came home from work and poor Oliver kept meowing and meowing at me. Then the next thing I know, he lost the ability to use his hind legs and his breathing got shallow. I knew then, that something was wrong. But when I went up to the neighbors house, no one was home. So I was about ready to grab a basket and take him to our vet, but then he took one last meow and passed away. And while I was so sad that he died, I was glad that I was there to comfort him in his last moments. That had got to be one of the saddest moments of my life.
Thanks for sharing this story.
Poor Luna. She was so cute and friendly! I was suprised she lasted as long as she did. When she was hit I wonder if the person just thought she was a wild animal and kept going. I hope it was quick.
